What is the K1 Fiance Visa?
The K-1 visa, commonly known as the Fiancé(e) visa, is designed for U.S. citizens who want to bring their foreign fiancé(e) to the U.S. for marriage. The K1 visa lets the fiancé(e) enter the U.S. for up to 90 days, during which they must tie the knot! Once you are married to each other, your foreign spouse can apply for a green card.

Quick look at the K1 visa process
Before the K1 interview, there are several steps you must complete first. Let’s take a quick look at the K1 visa process:
- Step 1 – Petition Filing: The U.S. citizen files Form I-129F, Petition for Alien Fiancé(e), with United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
- Step 2 – USCIS Processing: USCIS reviews the petition to ensure it meets all eligibility requirements.
- Step 3 – Approval: If the petition is approved, USCIS sends the approved petition to the National Visa Center (NVC).
- Step 4 – NVC Processing: The NVC forwards the approved petition to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the foreign fiancé(e)’s home country.
- Step 5 – Visa Application: The foreign fiancé(e) applies for the K-1 visa at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate. This involves completing Form DS-160, providing supporting documentation, undergoing a medical examination, and attending an interview.
- Step 6 – Interview: The foreign fiancé(e) attends an interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate. The consular officer evaluates the relationship, ensures eligibility, and determines whether to approve the visa.
- Step 7 – Visa Issuance: If approved, the foreign fiancé(e) receives the K-1 visa, allowing them to travel to the United States.
- Step 8 – Entry to the U.S.: Once in the United States, the couple must marry within 90 days of the foreign fiancé(e)’s entry. After marriage, the foreign spouse can apply for adjustment of status to become a lawful permanent resident (green card holder).
As you can see, the K1 visa interview happens after the foreign foreign fiancé(e) applies for the K-1 visa at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
Generally speaking, it takes 7 months for Form I-129F to get approved by USCIS. Then, it takes 4-6 weeks for the National Visa Center to forward the approved petition to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the foreign fiancé(e)’s home country.
You can expect to have your K1 interview about 8 months to 1 year after kicking off the K1 visa process. So, you have a lot of time to read through common K1 visa questions and prep for the interview!
