What is the TN visa? 

The TN visa is a U.S. nonimmigrant visa for qualified Canadian and Mexican professionals. Under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)/United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 2020, this visa allows workers in specialized fields, like engineering, healthcare, scientific research, and law, to work in the United States. 

Unlike other visas, the TN visa can be renewed indefinitely—typically in three-year increments.

Current processing times for TN visas in June 2026

There is no standard timeframe for TN visa processing. How long you wait will depend on your citizenship requirements and how you apply for your visa:

Applying at a U.S. Port of Entry 

Canadian citizens are exempt from needing a visa stamp in their passport to enter the U.S., and they can apply for TN status when they cross the U.S. border. When applying at a U.S. port of entry, documents are reviewed by a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer in real time. If approved, the officer then issues the TN visa on the spot. 

Depending on the port of entry’s workload, this process can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. Only Canadian citizens can apply for TN status using this method. 

Applying through USCIS 

Both Mexican citizens and Canadian citizens can apply for TN status through U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). With this method, the U.S. employer files Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker. As of June 2026, the current wait time for the TN category is 4 months.

If the foreign national is inside the United States in a lawful status at the time of filing, the petitioner can request for a “change of status” to grant the foreign national TN status without needing to leave the U.S. or obtain a visa.

If the foreign national is outside of the United States at the time of filing, then a USCIS filing is not mandatory, but it often simplifies the process. For example, if the prospective employee is a Canadian citizen, they can use the USCIS approval notice to enter the U.S. without needing a visa stamp and without having to bring a full TN application to the port of entry.

If the prospective worker is a Mexican citizen, they will need to apply for a visa at a U.S. consulate or embassy to be able to enter the United States (see next section). Having an approval notice from USCIS can help during the consular process but is not required. 

💡Tip: A “visa” is an international travel document. “Status” is what governs how long someone is allowed to stay inside the U.S. and what they are allowed to do while here. People in lawful status inside the U.S. can have their status changed without needing to exit and get a new visa (unless they want one due to upcoming international travel needs).

Applying through a consulate

As already stated above, if the prospective worker is a Canadian citizen, they do not need a TN visa stamp. They can apply at the border or enter using the USCIS approval notice. However, many Canadians still prefer to get a visa stamp because it simplifies the re-entry process—it means fewer questions every time they go through passport control. This is especially important for people who travel a lot internationally for work or who live close to the border and travel often to visit family in Canada.

If the prospective worker is a Mexican citizen, they must have a valid visa stamp to be able to enter the United States. They can apply for a visa by filing the Form DS-160 with the Department of State. Then, they must attend a visa interview. Once they have their visa stamp, they can enter the U.S. and start work. Completing Form DS-160 is fairly quick, but getting a visa interview can take time and varies by consulate, their current staffing levels, and availability.

TN Visa processing timelines: from application to approval

Let’s take a more in-depth look at typical visa timelines for each TN visa application method:

TN visa timeline for applying at a port of entry

Applying at a U.S. port of entry is typically the quickest way for citizens of Canada to get TN status. While there is a bit of prep work required, the actual visa application and approval process is fast. Visas are generally approved and issued on the same day the applicant crosses the border.

At the border, you’ll need to submit documents for CBP review. These include:

• Proof of Canadian citizenship (for example, a valid Canadian passport)
• Job offer letter from your U.S. employer
• TN support letter outlining your professional qualifications and visa eligibility under NAFTA/USMCA
• Proof of professional credentials or licenses (if applicable)

Then, the CBP officer will review your documents to confirm your eligibility. They may also ask you basic questions about your profession, qualifications, or job in the U.S.

Once the officer determines you meet the TN eligibility requirements, they will approve your visa. From there, you can legally cross the border and start working in the U.S.

Total Time to Process Visa:  For most Canadian citizens, the visa approval process at the border is quick. Approval generally takes as little as a few minutes and no more than a few hours.

TN visa timeline for applying via USCIS

Applicants who aren’t eligible for border crossing visa approval will need to apply for TN status through USCIS. This includes all Mexican citizens.

This application method is a multistep process. Each step takes time—and, as such, this method has longer visa processing times than applying at the border.

Phase 1: Employer Files the TN Petition

To start the process, your U.S. employer will need to:

• Complete Form-129
• Submit the completed petition with supporting documents 
• Pay all applicable fees

Phase 2: Receipt Notice (2 to 4 weeks)

When USCIS receives the completed petition and fees, it will send a Notice of Action, Form I-797C,  confirming receipt of the application.

Phase 3: Regular Processing (2 to 8 months)

During this stage, a USCIS officer will review the application to determine if you meet the eligibility criteria for the TN visa. Then, the officer will issue a decision on your petition.

While regular processing of Form I-129 can take several months, applicants have the option to pay for premium processing, which could reduce the time to a matter of weeks.

Depending on the results of their review, USCIS will issue an update to your case status:

• Approved. The officer approved your TN visa petition. USCIS will issue an approval notice, which you’ll need to request your visa stamp at a U.S. embassy or consulate.
• Request for Evidence (RFE). The officer needs more information to make a decision on your case. USCIS will issue a notice outlining what additional documents or evidence it needs.
• Denied. The officer denied your TN visa petition. USCIS will issue a denial notice outlining its reasons for denying your application.

According to USCIS, as of January 2026, 80 percent of Form I-129 cases are completed within 3.5 months.

Timeline for applying for the TN Visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate

Mexican citizens can apply for a TN visa directly at a U.S. embassy or consulate. To secure your visa, you’ll need to:

• File form DS-160, the Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application
• Pay the visa application fee
• Schedule a visa appointment at a U.S. embassy or consulate
• Gather required documentation (including a copy of DS-160 confirmation page, proof of application fee payment, TN support letter, proof of citizenship, etc.)
• Attend the interview
• Receive your visa stamp upon approval

Once you have your visa stamp, you can legally enter and work in the U.S. under TN visa status.

What about TN visa processing for dependents?

TN visa holders can bring spouses and unmarried children under 21 to the U.S. via TD visas. Similar to TN visas, processing times can vary:

• Citizens of Canada: Canadian dependents can apply for TD status at a U.S. port of entry when crossing the border. In most cases, approval is instant.
• Mexican and non-Canadian citizens: Mexican and non-Canadian dependents must apply for their TD visas at a U.S. embassy or consulate. Wait times can vary by location and season.

Note: TD dependents are not authorized to work in the U.S. But they can study while living in the United States, either part-time or full-time.

Is premium processing worth it for the TN visa?

If you want to shorten your overall visa timeline, premium processing could be an option. This service guarantees a decision on Form I-129 in 15 business days. As of June 2026, the filing fee for premium processing is $2,965.

Only you can determine whether premium processing is worth the additional cost. But generally, premium processing may be worth it if:

• You have the funds to cover the fee (or your employer will cover the cost)
• You want the peace of mind that comes with a faster timeline

Premium processing may not be worth it if:

• You’re applying far in advance and have plenty of time before your job start date
• You’d rather wait 4 to 6 months for regular processing and avoid the $2,965 fee

How to check TN visa processing times in June 2026

• USCIS service center workload. Service centers may run into issues that cause processing delays. This may include backlogs, high application volume, or staffing shortages.
• Petition issues. If your petition is incomplete or inaccurate, USCIS might request more information. If you get an RFE, you’ll need to gather and submit additional evidence to USCIS. Then, an officer will have to review that evidence and make a decision. This process can add weeks or months to your visa timeline.
