$35k recovered in unpaid wages for superintendent
Background: A client came to us because he was being evicted from his apartment. Upon further investigation and discussion, it turned out that he was a residential superintendent for a building in New York City for over 20 years. He was paid several hundred dollars per week, but provided a free apartment in which to live.
Outcome: While there was nothing we could do about the eviction, upon further investigation, the client was severely underpaid during his entire tenure at the job. Unfortunately, due to the statute of limitations, we could only go back a certain number of years. However, we were able to recover approximately $35,000 for him for his lost wages.
Result:
$35,000
$27k recovered for client unfairly fired
Background: A client who was working in the restaurant industry was fired for allegedly looking at her cell phone while she was supposed to be serving food to customers. She disputed that.
Outcome: Upon further investigation, we discovered that she was being paid “off the books” by her employer. No taxes were being withheld, no pay stubs were provided, and she was paid inconsistently via Venmo or with cash. Her employer did not track her hours. We were able to recover approximately $27,000 for her.
Result:
$27,000
$125k settlement for sexual harassment in the workplace
Background: A manager sent his employee, our client, a very personal and inappropriate picture. This obviously upset our client. She immediately quit her job.
Outcome: While the manager tried to claim his innocence, the company ended up settling for $125,000 prior to trial.
Result:
$125,000
$36k recovered for race discrimination in the workplace
Background: Our client, born in Ghana and raised mainly in the United States, worked in upstate New York in a retail job under a manager who was an immigrant from Vietnam. The manager consistently made racially insensitive comments, stating that she believed West Africans were lazy and wouldn't have hired our client if given the choice. After filing a complaint with Human Resources, our client was terminated shortly thereafter, citing "chronic tardiness" as the reason.
Outcome: We argued that our client was being subjected to discrimination based on her race and national origin. We were able to recover approximately $36,000 for her.
Result:
$36,000
